Let’s get one thing straight, Jack, owner of Dukes Glasgow, is a leather magician. We first discovered Dukes over on Instagram and when Jack offered to send us some of his handiwork to review we jumped at the chance and we were not disappointed.
Specialising in 100% hand crafted leather goods, you can feel the hard work and passion that goes into every one of Jack’s designs. I was very privileged to receive two items, the Camo Leather Card Wallet and the Horween Cardholder Wallet of which I’ll review below.
Jack sources his leather from Italy, USA and the UK, and the leather used in the Cardholder wallet is the famous Horween tannery from Chicago. Fun fact – it’s the same leather used to produce footballs for the NFL and basketballs in the NBA! The camo card sleeve is different, in that it is made from vegetable tanned leather, from Tuscany. You can feel the differences when both are in hand and both leathers bring a uniqueness and character which will only develop over time.
The construction of the wallets is an art in itself. Jack starts by cutting the leather individually. Stitching is then completed by hand, with each piece being saddle stitched, a time-consuming process but one which gives added durability to Jack’s work. Following construction, each piece is hand finished, with sanding, burnishing and oiling all taking place. This drawn-out process means that no individual piece is identical, giving a true uniqueness to each design. It’s epic!
We love supporting the independents here at Casual Cultures and when we come across someone like Jack we love to champion his work. Give Dukes Glasgow a browse and place an order, you definitely won’t be disappointed.
